Creating Fathers Out of Men With Children

Tamar Lewin, New York Times, 6/18/1995

“In 1965, Lyndon Johnson said the disintegration of black families was such a crisis that we needed a new national policy, a war on poverty,” said David Blankenhorn, president of the Institute for American Values, a family–research group in New York. “The rate of fatherlessness among white Americans today is almost exactly what it was among blacks 30 years ago. We don’t have a subculture of fatherlessness anymore, we have a culture of fatherlessness, and it’s spreading faster among whites than among blacks, among people over 30 than under.”
