...the Institute for American Values, a nonpartisan organization that has been trying to reverse what it calls a broad “retreat from marriage” — the reality, for example, that more than 30 percent of American children are now born out of wedlock (the figure was 5.3 percent in 1960) or that 60 percent of new marriages will break up. In the institute’s opinion, this steady separation of parenthood from marriage is not just one more shift in history’s long and irreversible pattern of change in family structure. It is a social disaster.
